Questions
A few frequently asked questions.
How long are counselling appointments?
Most counselling and psychotherapy sessions last approximately 50 minutes.
The number of sessions you may need will depend on what you are hoping to achieve and the issues you want to explore. We will regularly review how therapy is going together, so that we can consider whether further sessions would be helpful.
How confidential is counselling?
Confidentiality is an important part of creating a safe and trusting therapeutic relationship. What you share in counselling will normally remain confidential.
There are some circumstances where confidentiality may need to be limited, for example where there are serious concerns about your safety or the safety of someone else, safeguarding concerns, or where I have a legal or professional obligation to share information.
I also have regular professional supervision, which is an essential part of safe and ethical counselling practice. I discuss my work with my supervisor to reflect on my practice and ensure that I am working effectively, while taking care to protect your identity and confidentiality. If there is anything about confidentiality that you would like to understand before starting therapy, please feel free to ask.
What ethical guidelines do you follow?
I work in accordance with the BACP Ethical Framework for the Counselling Professions, which provides guidance for safe, ethical and professional counselling practice.
I am committed to ongoing professional development and regular professional supervision as part of maintaining and developing my practice.
How is my personal information protected?
Your privacy is important to me. Personal information is handled in accordance with relevant UK data protection and privacy requirements. You can read my full Privacy Statement here.
How do I know if counselling is right for me?
It is completely understandable to have questions about whether counselling is right for you or whether we would work well together.
I offer a brief, informal phone call before you decide whether to book an appointment. This gives you an opportunity to tell me a little about what you are looking for, ask any questions and get a sense of whether I might be the right counsellor for you. There is no pressure to make a decision during the call.
Can I have counselling online?
Yes. I offer counselling and psychotherapy by secure video call as well as in person. Online therapy can provide greater flexibility and convenience while still offering the privacy, connection and therapeutic relationship at the heart of our work.
